The Pink Unicorn//September 16 -19, 2021

By Elise Forier Edie

True unconditional love of a parent involves hard work, perseverance, and standing up for a child even when one doesn’t always understand their journey. The Pink Unicorn is an award-winning, one-woman comedy about gender identity and big hair. The play traces a mother’s journey from apprehension to tolerance to acceptance. Trisha Lee, a Christian widow and proud member of her church and her community, considers herself to be open-minded and accepting – that is, at least compared to the other mothers in her conservative Texas hometown. But Trisha’s values are called into question when her teenager Jo comes out as gender queer and attempts to start a chapter of the Gay Straight Alliance at the local high school. Faced with opposition from her family, church, and community, Trisha is inspired to embark on a journey to meet her child with unconditional love at a time when transgender people and gender issues aren’t even on the radar.
